Our Town - Whitley Bay
Northumbria School of English is situated on the sea front at Whitley Bay, a lively seaside town on the North East coast, only 25 minutes by Metro train from Newcastle upon Tyne, home of two of the region’s prestigious universities, the University of Newcastle and Northumbria University. It's a great location to learn English in the North of England.
This stretch of the coastline has award winning sandy beaches at Whitley Bay and at neighbouring Cullercoats and Tynemouth.
The famous lighthouse on St. Mary’s Island in Whitley Bay is a delightful attraction for both locals and visitors alike, hosting exhibitions and activities as well as being an important nature reserve. A new event on our social programme this year was a stranding on the island. Great fun!
People come to the beach to walk, jog, train for the world-famous Great North Run half marathon, explore rock pools, fly kites and even to make Hollywood movies.
The town has a good selection of interesting shops, a theatre, an excellent library which you can join, numerous sports clubs, a swimming pool and gym and a successful local football team as well as a variety of bars, cafés and restaurants.
There are opportunities in the town for all kinds of sports, swimming, ice-skating, ice hockey, bowling, golf, tennis, football, rugby and cricket. You can go sailing, fishing, scuba diving and surfing.
Whatever your interests, we can help you get involved.
